Orphan Works Licensing Portal Hackathon

 

IP Osgoode, the Intellectual Property Law & Technology Program at Osgoode Hall Law School, and the Copyright and International Trade Policy Branch of the Department of Canadian Heritage invite you to participate in a hackathon to develop options for a new online system to process the licensing of Canadian Orphan works.

 

Why A Hackathon?

Not just for programmers or coders, hackathons bring together smart people with lots of different expertise to tackle a big issue with intensity, energy and enthusiasm in a condensed period of time. We’ll use Design Thinking, a user-centric design process pioneered by Stanford’s d.school to infuse some genuine creativity. The participants will use their expertise and creativity to generate new solutions for an online orphan works licensing portal.

The result?
Accelerated innovation.

Prizes will be awarded for the best concept and the best prototype.

 

Who Will Be There?

People who care about orphan works: creators, archivists, collective societies, libraries, and policy makers…

And you.

As a member of a stakeholder group, you have a knowledgeable and very useful perspective to offer. And it’s not just your great ideas but we know you’ll be open to rolling up your sleeves to work collaboratively with people from all kinds of fields.

 

Who’s Behind It?

IP Osgoode (Osgoode Hall Law School’s IP Program), the Copyright and International Trade Policy Branch of the Department of Canadian Heritage, PCH Innovation Fund, and Stanford’s d-school, Stanford Law School (truly the best in the business when it comes to design thinking) are bringing people who see the same thing differently together for this special event.

This hackathon is also part of research funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

 

When Is It?

The hackathon will be held at Osgoode Hall Law School on February 3 – 5, 2016.
